Just give our office a call for information and to get signed up for the trip of your choice. Our staff is ready to help individuals and small and large groups find the ideal paddling adventure!
Day and Half-Day Trips:
A non-refundable payment in full is due upon trip registration.

Overnight Trips:
A $75 non-refundable deposit is required for trip registration. Final balance is due 60 days from the trip departure.

Rentals:
A non-refundable payment of half the total rental fee is due upon registration. Final balance is due 60 days from the trip departure.
Day and Half-Day Trips:
The maximum size for full groups on these adventures is 12 participants with two guides.

Overnight Trips:
One and two night trips have a maximum of 12 participants with two guides; although group sizes are typically smaller.
Trips of three or more nights are generally limited to 6 participants with one guide.
Custom Trips and Youth Groups with larger numbers can be accommodated on both day and overnight trips.

Highlights such as visits to Madeline Island, Big Top Chautauqua and tours of Bayfield's Orchards are always high on the list as companion activities to your paddling adventure.

For those that are new to sea kayaking or new to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, we strongly urge you to consider taking a guided/outfitted trip for your first time. There is simply so much to know to safely navigate the open water crossings and to make sound judgments about local weather and water conditions. We recommend kayak rentals for people who have paddled in the Apostle Islands before or have previously gone on one of our overnight trips. A guided trip can serve as a springboard for many future years of knowledgeable trip planning and embarking on your own exciting adventures.

A main reason that people want to rent gear and shape their own trip is for the privacy and flexibility of non-group travel; we get that! On our guided trips once we are off the water, there is ample time for people to go off on their own for hikes, conversation and exploration.

Another reason that people want to put together their own trips is economical; it is perceived to be less expensive when you add up the direct costs. What is not factored into this approach is the tremendous value of the education and exposure you get on a trip that is organized and guided by an outfitter that has 20 years experience in the area. You hear the stories, find the secret spots, learn how to strategically pack your kayak, what gear to use, and the nuances of paddle strokes. Details like route planning and securing your permit and shuttles are all taken care of for you. But most importantly; you have a seasoned guide that can make sound judgments about weather, crossings, first aid, repairs and can perform rescues and rough water maneuvers when conditions quickly change.

One way shuttles for up to five people renting kayaks from us:

  • Groups over 5 people – add $5 per person to shuttle fee
  • Shuttles to/from these destinations may be available for non-renters on a per case basis. Call for cost and availability.

 

LAUNCH/LAND FEES

  • For our renters there is a $5 fee to launch and/or land from our facility.
  • Non-renters accompanying our rental groups may launch or land for a $10 fee.

 

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • We will do our best to accommodate your shuttle needs but please allow time for pick-ups and drop-offs according to our availability.
  • Equipment is due back to the Living Adventure center no later than 4:00 pm of the last rental day.

 

INTRODUCTORY SAFETY COURSE – a requirement for sea kayak rentals

Sea Kayak & Equipment RentalsThis 3 hour course is required for all people renting kayaks from us. The course starts with a dry land seminar that covers topics such as wind, waves and weather and their effects on the paddler. Then we discuss local safety issues for paddling in the Apostle Islands that include basic navigation and emergency response. Next kayaks are fitted and it’s launch time for the on-water portion of the course. Here we briefly cover paddle strokes and braces and then it’s on to deep water res-cues and wet exits where participants have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Lake Superior (!) and learn how to get each other back in the kayaks from the water. We coach everyone to make conservative decisions when conditions are less than perfect out there. In this short time the course content only scratches the surface of necessary skills and judgment for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Course cost:

  • $50 per person with rentals.
  • $60 per person as a stand-alone course

Introductory Safety Courses are generally scheduled at 8:30 am in the morning of your first rental day. Custom times for groups may be available.
