Each year more parents are introducing themselves and their kids to sea kayaking and discovering that getting out on the water for a shared adventure is a great way for a family to spend their vacation together. Whether it’s for a half, full day or an overnight trip, the excitement of paddling into sea caves or walking the ‘singing sand’ beaches of the Apostle Islands reaches across generations and lays a foundation for many future years of paddling together.
Generally, age limits for our trips where kids take on a full paddling position (bow or stern of a tandem kayak) are 12 years for day trips and 16 years for overnights. On day trips, kids ages 8-11 come along as ‘duffers’ in a non-paddling center position in a triple kayak if there are two adults to accompany them. These age limits are carefully determined by kayak dimensions, dynamics in mixed age groups, and the seriousness of paddling on Lake Superior. It’s just not a safe environment for ‘little kids’.
But! In an attempt to accommodate a wider range of families; we have selected trip dates where we group families together which gives us more flexibility in taking kids of varied ages that might otherwise by under our age minimums.
Families paddling together tend to have more openness for sharing paddling positions in the kayaks and with other aspects of the experience such as pace, distance, routing and length of time on the water. Custom family trips are available for groups with a minimum of 6 people, name your date! We encourage you to plan your vacation with another family to ensure the trip viability.
Full & Half Day trips for families are scheduled by appointment, just give us a call.

Living Adventure has been hosting outdoor adventure programs for Scouts, Y-Groups, Camps and Organizations for over 15 years. Our programs are well established; trip dates go on our calendar each season for various returning groups and camps across the Midwest. Many of the youth from these groups have come back to us over the years as staff and guides. These are some of our favorite audiences to introduce to sea kayaking and the marvels of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. The enthusiasm and openness of youth groups in an adventure setting is contagious and we embrace the opportunity to facilitate this experience for them. Our guides are skilled outdoor professionals who fill the days with learning, leadership, innovation, fun and adventure.
Safety is at the forefront on all of our trips; we deeply respect the power of the Lake and take our training, equipment and judgment seriously to ensure that trip participants have the best experience possible.
We offer Youth Group rates for both day and overnight trips. For overnights we have two pricing schematics to meet your needs; Partially and Fully Outfitted. Just give our office a call for information and to discuss the best trip for your group.
There are groups that have esteemed positions in the Living Adventure Hall of Fame. These great folks have reconfigured themselves and joined us over the years with friends and families; you know who you are! We feel that all of our customers are part of the Living Adventure family and we invite you to become one of us this summer. A sea kayaking adventure is a great platform for family reunions, all kinds of special celebrations, father/sons, mother/daughters; bachelor parties, girl friends, you name it.
To create a custom or private trip; we need a minimum of 6 people (5 in certain cases). Then you select your group size and the dates you desire and we will do our absolute best to accommodate you. The earlier you contact us in the spring or summer, the more availability there will be for campsites in the National Park.
You can base your trip on any of our listed overnight trips or create your own. Reduced rates for custom trips depend on the trip dates and group size. Just give our office a call for more information and to help create the ideal adventure for your group.
