YOGA AND SEA KAYAKING

2010 Artful Adventure trip dates will be available in February!

Yoga is an age-old practice that builds strength, increases flexibility and reduces stress. Many people are accustomed to doing Yoga in a studio with others or in the privacy of their home. On our Apostle Islands yoga trip, you’ll enjoy practicing outside, under a canopy of trees where the rhythms of gentle breezes and waves synchronize with body, mind and spirit.

We find that our Apostle Islands Artful Adventures provide an ideal environment for learning. You are on vacation (!) with an energized, open mind and ample time to focus on doing something positive for yourself. Our teachers and mentors are well adept at coaching ‘first-timers’ on their creative journeys as well as inspiring and bringing insight to those with previous experience.

Beth Lowthian, certified yoga instructor, joins us for the week as our yoga coach. After studying several yoga styles, Beth completed training in a tradition that strives to make yoga more readily available to all physical fitness levels. By respecting each person's individual ability, Beth teaches a gentle approach, building to a more energetic and challenging level depending on the student's readiness. Classes are modified, as necessary, to meet a student's needs. “You don't have to be a human pretzel to enjoy the benefits of yoga!”

Because of the kayaking involved in Beth’s Apostle Islands Yoga trip classes, she has developed a series of stretches and poses that support muscle movement and flexibility used in paddling and sitting in the kayaks.

YOGA & SEA KAYAKING BASE CAMP (3-DAY) TRIP ITINERARY
Please keep in mind that this itinerary may change!!
DAY 1
8:30 am Meet at the Living Adventure main facility for introductions and general trip orientation and an intro Yoga sesson.
9:30-Noon We spend the morning on the water learning basic kayaking strokes, practicing wet exits and rescues and becoming familiar with safety considerations on Lake Superior. This is a fun, informative session - prepare to get wet!
12:00 - 2:00 Lunch and packing for the overnight.
2:00 – 5:00 Depending on camping permit availability, we’ll base camp on Oak, Sand or York Island. On the way, we may pass several historic Lake Superior shipwrecks; the Fedora, Ottawa and Coffinberry – all of which are visible from the kayaks and are either submerged or partially on shore. Or we may have the unique opportunity to paddle in some sea caves: under arches, into vaulted chambers and into the cavern's deepest recesses. The areas we will depend on permits we are able to acquire through the National Park Service.
Evening Set up camp and enjoy an early evening meal at the water’s edge. We'll have a break after dinner to let food digest and then an evening Yoga session with the sky as our ceiling and the sand as our matt to end a beautiful day.
DAY 2
Morning Sun salutations with the sun rise begin the first full day in the islands, afterwhich your guide will have coffee and breakfast ready. Next, we'll load the kayaks for a day paddle to experience sea caves, red sandstone cliffs, spectacular views, a loon swimming by or perhaps a historic lighthouse. Again our itineray will depend on our campsite locaton.
Lunch A shore lunch on a remote sand spit.
Afternoon Paddle back to camp in time for another Yoga session, enjoying the breezes, chirps of the birds in the trees and the lapping of waves at water's edge.
Evening Another sumptuous dinner and then settle in for a campfire and maybe even a story of the ghost that haunts beaches on some of the islands. Be sure to ask your guide about the captain of the Sevona, a steamship that went down during a tremendous storm on the Sand Island shoals. A night time Yoga session ends the day under the stars.
DAY 3
Morning Welcome the day with Yoga and then breakfast.
Lunch Lunch is enjoyed on a lovely beach on the way back to Living Adventure.
2:00 pm The trip wraps up around 2:30 at your final destination where we are met by a Living Adventure staff person and are shuttled back to Bayfield.

NAMASTE.
Other camping spots may include Basswood Island or York Island or even a secluded beach along the mainland with a chance to paddle the Mainland Sea Caves. Please ask about permits when you call to make your reservation…we will know 30 days before trip departure date.
