TEACHING & TOURING
The best of both worlds!

This offering is one of our best ideas yet and has readily become a Living Adventure guest favorite for it's unique two-day itinerary; one day of focused instruction, followed by a second day of a beautiful tour to the Sea Caves. Learning and practicing new skills enhances the adventure of kayak touring, and kayak touring provides opportunities for new skills to integrate into muscle memory and become a solid part of your kayaking style. This is two days of great paddling but unlike our camping trips, we've taken out the overnight segment and left the option open to you of where to spend the night in the Bayfield area. There are great campgrounds, motels and gorgeous B&B's; we're happy to make recommendations!

Day 1: Meet at the LAI adventure center at 9:00 am. From our outdoor classroom on a grassy vista overlooking Lake Superior, you briefly learn about the world of sea kayaking: safety, judgment, navigation and weather. Following this is an intro to the kayaks, paddles, gear and boat fit. Next, off you go for a short tour up the beautiful shoreline north of our launch. Then it's lunch, and if nothing else does, this will certainly bring you back the next day! The afternoon session is when you learn the very necessary skills of wet exits and kayak rescues. This is the perfect environment to practice; the water tends to warm up in our protected little cove (and we've got great wetsuits) and our instructors are fabulous at guiding your first kayak immersion experience. The day ends around 3:30 pm. We can recommend some fun eating spots in town and check out the Big Top Chautauqua schedule for a great night's entertainment.

Day 2: Meet back at Living Adventure at 9:00 am and we'll load up in the van for an exciting day adventure to the Sea Caves (see DAY TRIPS for a detailed description of this paddle trip). This is an exceptionally beautiful out-and-back route of about 6 total miles. With the skills and rescues learned from the previous day, we are much more versatile to play in the waves, if we have some, and maneuver with greater finesse in and among the sea caves and arches. Lunch is enjoyed at the turn around point on remote Driftwood Beach, with views of Sand and Eagle Island; a rookery for cormorants and herring gulls. This memorable day wraps up around 3:00 pm back at Living Adventure.
