Our guided Full-Day and Half-Day Trips are geared for first time paddlers. Those with previous experience will also enjoy the beauty and exhilaration of these tours. The trips begin with introductory paddling instruction and an overview of sea kayaking. Stable tandem kayaks are provided to enhance learning skills and to further your enjoyment of the spectacular views.
Getting on the water is a must when visiting the Bayfield and Apostle Islands area (ok, we’re biased); paddling connects you to the past, grounds you in the present and provides a source for continued enjoyment in the future. The Apostle Islands are rich in cultural and natural history and Lake Superior has spirited many an adventurous soul over the years. You’ll be amazed at how fun even a short time on the Lake can be and what a very special component a kayak tour adds to your summer vacation.

A hallmark of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the ancient geology noted by red sandstone cliffs and sea caves. Centuries of wave action, freezing and thawing have sculpted artful caves considered to be the most spectacular in the Great Lakes. Kayakers have the unique opportunity to paddle under arches, into vaulted chambers and into the cavern’s deepest recesses. This is truly a breathtaking experience not to be missed.
Your day starts off meeting at the Living Adventure Center where you are introduced to your guide for the day. We shuttle together in our van (about 15 minutes) to the put-in area at Meyers Road. This is a beautiful sandy stretch of beach in the National Park that faces the Minnesota and Canadian north shores. After an orientation to paddle strokes and the equipment, off we go for the 2-3 mile trip out along the caves and cliffs to Driftwood Beach. Here you enjoy one of our great lunches (turkey pesto & Costa Rican wraps AND awesome chocolate chip cookies made by our local bakery!) while resting and enjoying views of Sand Island and Eagle Island; a rookery for cormorant and herring gulls. The trip back along the caves is equally beautiful in reverse, as the western afternoon sun further enhances the deep colors of the rocky cliffs. You can now consider yourself a full-blown kayaker (!) and our hope is that this day sparks a long-term interest for you in this wonderful activity.
If wind/weather conditions prohibit a safe paddle at the Sea Caves - our alternative location is at the beautiful Bark Bay Estuary. Here winding river channels take us for an intimate tour of the Bark River where we come out on a pristine beach on Lake Superior, but in a more protected area than the exposed cliffs of the caves.

Some of the most beautiful scenery in the Islands is along the mainland shore north of the Living Adventure launch. We've put together a great full day tour as an alternative to our popular Sea Caves trip. We encourage those who have been to the Sea Caves with us to come along on this tour that takes you past the historic shipwrecks of the Fedora, Ottawa and Coffinberry (see Shipwreck Half-Day description). You'll cross Schooner Bay and wrap Red Cliff Point for a panoramic view of 8 Apostle Islands and the Minnesota north shore. Lunch is enjoyed on a sand beach near Frog Bay. If weather permits, we may cross to Basswood Island and renowned Honeymoon Rock for the return home. Beginners and experienced paddlers welcome.

On the night of September 20, 1901, the Fedora was making a run from Duluth to Ashland. As the steamship passed Basswood Island, a kerosene lamp exploded in the engine room and the vessel caught fire. In a fiery blaze, the Captain ran ‘er a ground into the mainland shore. Visible from the Living Adventure center, the twisted steel and oak beams have endured over time and can be seen both above and below the waterline. Learn about the last voyage of the Fedora; paddle over and near the wreckages of the tugboat Ottawa and the Coffinberry as you cruise the pristine shoreline and red cliffs of Buffalo and Schooner Bays. Launch and land from the Living Adventure Center for this out-and-back tour of about 3 miles. Eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, loons, blue herons, otters, beaver and our resident woodchuck family may accompany your outing!
